Website accessibility check: basic WCAG tests explained

Six basic automatic checks of the home page: page language, page title, whether zoom is allowed on phones, text alternatives for images, labels on form fields and a main heading. This is not a full WCAG audit — many problems can only be found by a person.

What the colours mean

  • OK. The basic automatic checks pass.
  • Needs attention. Some basic problems were found — for example, images without text alternatives.
  • Problem. Several basic problems were found. People who use screen readers or need larger text will struggle to use the site.

Why it matters for your business

  • Since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act applies to many online shops and services selling in the EU, with fines set by each country.
  • About one in six people lives with a significant disability (WHO); older visitors also need larger text and clear forms.
  • Accessible sites are also easier for search engines and AI assistants to read.

What you can do yourself

  • Set the page language in the <html lang> tag.
  • Give every meaningful image a short text description (alt).
  • Connect every form field to a visible label; do not block zoom.

Common doubts

Does the European Accessibility Act apply to us?

Since 28 June 2025 it applies to many businesses selling products and services to consumers in the EU; micro-enterprises providing services (fewer than 10 staff and up to €2 million turnover) are exempt.

Can an accessibility widget fix this?

No. Overlay widgets do not change the site's code and do not make it compliant; real fixes in the code do.
