Mobile usability check: buttons, font size, contrast

Whether the page is adapted to phone screens (viewport), whether people can zoom in, whether buttons and links are big enough to tap, whether text is large and contrasty enough, whether the content fits the screen width, and whether the phone number can be tapped to call. Part of the data comes from Google Lighthouse on a simulated phone.

What the colours mean

  • OK. The page is comfortable to use on a phone.
  • Needs attention. There are annoyances: small buttons, pale text or a phone number that cannot be tapped.
  • Problem. The site is not adapted for phones: it opens as a tiny copy of the desktop version.

Why it matters for your business

  • Most visitors come from phones and close an awkward site within seconds.
  • A phone number that cannot be tapped means lost calls.
  • Google ranks pages that are comfortable on mobile higher.

What you can do yourself

  • Open your site on your phone and try to find the phone number, a price and the contact button within a minute.
  • Make the number a tel: link so it can be tapped.
  • Check the page in PageSpeed Insights (mobile) to see the exact small buttons and pale text.

Common doubts

The site opens on a phone — what else is needed?

Opening and being comfortable are different things. If buttons are tiny, text is pale and the phone number cannot be tapped, people go to a competitor.

How is this different from speed?

Speed is how long the page takes to load. Usability is what people can do once it has loaded: read, hit the right button, call you.
