Website Checker / What the site gives away

What your website gives away: GPS in photos, names in PDFs

We read hidden data in JPEG photos (GPS coordinates and device model) and in PDF document properties (author name and software) on the home page and other checked pages. Only files on your own domain: up to 12 photos and 4 documents.

What the colours mean

  • OK. The photos and documents we checked contain no coordinates and no author names.
  • Needs attention. Several PDF documents show author names.
  • Problem. Photos contain the exact coordinates of where they were taken.

Why it matters for your business

  • Coordinates in photos reveal the address of an office, warehouse, plant or home — even if the site does not list it.
  • For defence companies and volunteers this is a direct threat to people and property.
  • Names and roles from internal documents are used for fake letters and calls.

What you can do yourself

  • Turn off location in the camera of the phone you use for site photos.
  • Remove data from photos before uploading: in Windows — Properties → Details → Remove properties.
  • Clear document properties before publishing a PDF (in Word: File → Info → Inspect Document).

What OLBO can do

Common doubts

What is wrong with ordinary photos?

Phone cameras often write the exact coordinates of where a photo was taken into the file. Upload a photo of a warehouse or office without cleaning it, and anyone can find the address.

An author name in a PDF — so what?

On its own, little. But employee names and software names help fraudsters write convincing letters “from accounting” or “from the director”.
